Taxonomic Remarks

Easily distinguished from other known Zygonemertes spp. of southeast Australia by the color, shape of the head, having fewer ocelli, and by COI sequence data.

Description of Material

Body 70 mm long, 0.3 mm wide, threadlike, semi translucent. Background colour uniform golden to deer brown. Cephalic lobe wider than adjacent body region, slightly longer than wide, separated from body by a narrowing (neck furrow inconspicuous). Conspicuous oblique cerebral organ furrows visible dorsally and ventrally. Multiple ocelli (10-12 on each side) scattered around margin of cephalic lobe with two or three posterior to cerebral ganglia. Epidermal sickle-like inclusions present. Posterior tip bluntly pointed. Stylet basis in the one sequenced individual was deformed or damaged, so its shape is not known. S/B = 0.5, two accessory stylet sacs with 4 – 5 stylets in each.

Found in Posidonia seagrass in the subtidal zone.
