Taxonomic Remarks

Body shape and colour, number and distribution of ocelli, reduced cerebral organ furrows, and a larger S/B ratio differentiate this species from other Nipponnemertes spp. COI sequence aligns this species within the Nipponnemertes, but is >10% divergent from the nearest congener.

Description of Material

Body 3-10 mm long, 0.25-0.3 mm wide, relatively long and slender, semi-translucent, white; cephalic lobe bluntly rounded; cerebral ganglia large, colourless, clear, showing through body wall; cerebral organ furrows inconspicuous, neck furrow absent. Two to four ocelli arranged in a sparse row along each side of head. Stylet basis in the one examined individual was greatly reduced, much shorter than the stylet; S/B = 6. Two accessory stylet sacs with 5-6 stylets each.

Associated with coral rubble.

Distribution

Only known from Atauro Island, Timor-Leste.
