Taxonomic Remarks

Gnosonesima sp.2 lacks eyes and can therefore be readily distinguished from G. brattstroemi and Gnosonesima sp.1. Thus, the morphology of the male sclerotised structures provides the primary traits for differentiating the new species from previously described ones. The straight, 80-µm-long stylet of Gnosonesima sp.2 differs from that of B. mediterranea (proximally bent, 240 µm long) and B. tropicalis (distally branched, 133 µm long). In G. antarctica, the stylet is 97 µm long, and the testes are positioned anterior to the male copulatory bulb, whereas in Gnosonesima sp.2 the testes are located caudally to the bulb. Both G. borealis and G. reisingeri are poorly known species: a short, thin-walled, eversible penis has been described for G. borealis, and a short stylet for G. reisingeri. Unfortunately, measurements for these structures are unavailable, and the remaining morphology of the male atrial organs is not comparable to that of Gnosonesima sp.2.
