Taxonomic Remarks

The only known species of Cicerina bearing two cirri within the male copulatory bulb is C. bicirrata, making Cicerina sp.1 the second. In both species, the accessory cirrus is longer than the ejaculatory cirrus. However, both cirri are considerably longer in C. bicirrata (50 µm and 100 µm for the ejaculatory and accessory cirri, respectively) than in Cicerina sp.1 (29 µm and 56 µm, respectively). Additionally, in C. bicirrata both cirri are armed with spines up to 7 µm long, whereas in Cicerina sp.1 the spines reach a maximum length of 5 µm.

Description of Material

Species of Cicerina with two spiny cirri within the male copulatory bulb (ejaculatory and accessory). The ejaculatory cirrus is curved, 26–33 µm in length (x¯ = 29 µm; n = 4) and is armed with 3–4 µm long, fine spines. The accessory cirrus is 50–60 µm in length (x¯ = 56 µm; n = 4) and is armed with 4–5 µm long, claw-shaped spines. The bursal mouthpieces are 13–14 µm long (x¯ = 14 µm; n = 5), their proximal part is funnel shaped and the distal tubular.
