Taxonomic Remarks

Cheliplanilla sp.1 is the only known representative of the genus Cheliplanilla possessing two accessory cirri within the male bulb. All other described species of the genus include only an ejaculatory duct, which may be armed with spines, a stylet, or a combination of both. The presence of a stylet has been reported for C. caudata, C. karlingi, and now for Cheliplanilla sp.2 (see further description). A caudal tail has been documented in most species of the genus, including C. todaroi, C. implicata, C. caudata, and C. rubra, but is absent in C. karlingi, C. cavavulcana, Cheliplanilla sp.1, and Cheliplanilla sp.2. However, C. cavavulcana is distinguished from these species by having only a few small spines restricted to the proximal part of the cirrus, whereas in Cheliplanilla sp.1 the ejaculatory cirrus is completely spiny.

Description of Material

Species of Cheliplanilla with proboscis hooks 21–22 µm long (n = 2). Each hook is armed with two pairs of 2-µm-long denticles, one pair positioned at its midlength and the other subdistally. The male copulatory bulb includes an ejaculatory cirrus and two distal accessory cirri. The ejaculatory cirrus is 43–48 µm long (x¯ = 46 µm; n = 3), armed with 6–8 µm long spines (x¯ = 7 µm; n = 20). The longer accessory cirrus is 20–21 µm long (x¯ = 20 µm; n = 3), armed of 3–4 µm long spines (x¯ = 4 µm; n = 10). The smaller accessory cirrus is 12–19 µm long (x¯ = 16 µm; n = 3), armed of 3–4 µm long spines (x¯ = 3 µm; n = 10).
