Taxonomic Remarks

This species differs from Mitrella intermissalineata Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 by its more straight whorls, more rounded and not so elongate aperture, the presence of the virtual subsutural cord, the weaker columellar callus with the basal cords clearly coming through and the different color pattern. It differs from Mitrella nix Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 by its more elongate shell form, higher number of teleoconch whorls, higher number of denticles on the inside of the outer lip, the slightly longer siphonal canal and the different color pattern. Mitrella angustalineata Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 has a color pattern that is close to the new species, but is bigger, less elongate, has a higher number of protoconch and teleoconch whorls, more shouldered whorls, a lower number of denticles on the inside of the outer lip and a much more developed columellar callus with clear denticles.

Description of Material

Shell of moderate size for the genus, adult size up to 8.9 mm; fusifom, elongate. whorls rather straight. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about 1.5 smooth whorls. Transition to teleoconch weak. Teleoconch consisting of about six whorls. Axial sculpture absent. Spiral sculpture absent, apart from the basal cords. There is virtually a subsutural spiral band, but this is thicker shell structure from the inside shining through. Basal cords clearly present and reaching to the adapical end of the columella. Aperture average width for the genus, about 40% of shell height. Outline of aperture rather rounded. Outside of outer lip with a thickened axial rib, with the continuation of the basal cords on the abapical end. Inside of outer lip without a clear sinus and with 8 rather fine denticles of unequal size. Columellar callus thin, not raised, with the basal cords coming through. Parietal callus weak. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. Teleoconch whorls slightly translucent whitish with a pattern of irregular orange-brown markings. These markings are bigger spots just below the suture with finer irregular axial lines lower on the whorls. Aperture and columella white. Protoconch slightly translucent off-white with some cream. Height of holotype: 8.9 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
