Taxonomic Remarks

This species is closest to Anachis constrictocanalis Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 from the Norfolk Ridge. It differs in its much bigger size, different form of protoconch which is much more elongate, higher number of teleoconch whorls, more triangular axial ribs on early teleoconch whorls, a pronounced spiral subsutural cord, much clearer basal cords and the weaker columellar callus.

Description of Material

Shell of small size for the genus, adult size up to 6.2 mm; fusifom, elongate. Semi-translucent. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about 1.4 smooth whorls. Transition to teleoconch clearly visible. Teleoconch consisting of about 4.3-4.5 whorls. Axial sculpture on all whorls, consisting of strong axial ribs with wide interspaces. About 9 ribs on the first teleoconch whorl, 8 on the following two whorls and 7 on the final whorl. These ribs are thicker just below midwhorl, giving them a triangular appearance when seen from the side. The last axial rib close to the aperture is much stronger. Spiral sculpture absent apart from a thick, very clear cord just below the suture and apart from the basal cords on the last whorl. Basal cords ventrally ranging to the adapical end of the columella. Aperturer rather wide, about 43% of shell height. Outside of outer lip with continuation of the basal cords. Inside of outer lip without a sinus. A slightly tickened zone is present, but denticulation is not visible. Columellar callus thin, only slightly raised on the abapical side, without denticulation. Parietal callus thin, but clearly present. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. Teleoconch whorls off-white to cream. On the last whorl two darker orange-brown spiral bands are visible. The inside of the aperture also shows these bands. Columellar and parietal callus white. Protoconch off-white to cream. Height of holotype: 6.0 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
