Taxonomic Remarks

Argeneuthria sp. nov. is readily distinguished from congeners by its uniform white to cream shell coloration and the presence of only two faint spiral furrows on the base of the last whorl, evenly spaced and clearly visible. This combination contrasts most directly with Argeneuthria paessleri, which typically shows a darker shell coloration and, diagnostically, 8–9 spiral furrows on the base of the last whorl, markedly more numerous and usually more strongly expressed than in the present species. The new species also differs from A. cerealis in its much paler (cream–white) coloration and reduced basal spiral sculpture. Likewise, it can be separated from A. philippii by the weaker spiral ornamentation at the base and the absence of the stronger, more pervasive spiral sculpture typically reported for that species. Finally, A. varicosa is distinguishable by its characteristic varix-like axial thickening/varices (reflected in the species name) and a more conspicuously sculptured shell, whereas Argeneuthria sp. nov. lacks such pronounced varices and retains a comparatively smooth profile, with basal sculpture restricted to only two low spiral furrows.

Description of Material

Shell small, fusiform, moderately thin, with a moderately elevated spire; whorls moderately convex; suture distinct and slightly impressed. Teleoconch smooth to weakly sculptured, with sculpture dominated by fine, irregular axial growth lines; no strong spiral cords on the spire whorls. Last whorl inflated, occupying most of the shell length; base gently rounded. Spiral sculpture restricted to the base of the last whorl, expressed as two very faint spiral furrows, evenly spaced and running around the basal region; the furrows are shallow and not strongly incised. Aperture elongate-oval; outer lip thin, simple; inner lip with a thin, smooth parietal callus. Columella smooth, slightly concave. Siphonal canal short and open. Shell colour uniformly white to creamy, without evident darker pigmentation; aperture and interior also pale/whitish.
