Taxonomic Remarks

Detailed work is needed to define the diagnostic charters of this species, but it is not the same as a described species from intertidal/shallow NZ waters, T. rawhitia.

Description of Material

A fairly large Tanaopsis species, a genus normally found in shallow waters. The photo voucher is a “swimming male” stage of the species but still exhibits the genus characteristic of a bifid terminal “unguis” on the fixed finger, and the dactylus fitting between two teeth on the fixed finger.

Ecology

Benthic sediments, possibly a shallow burrower.

Distribution

Bounty Trough, 775 m, TAN2402 Stn 11. Also, southern flank of Chatham Rise, 463-1090 m.
