Taxonomic Remarks

This is one of a three species of Stenotanais with parallel-sided uropod rami, S .arenasi (Central Pacific) and S. crassiseta (NE Atlantic), and S. macrodactylus (Gulf of Mexico). Mores study is required to define this species’ features and it is possible that there are two species in NZ waters.

Description of Material

A typical Stenotanais – small, thin, with long (usually deflexed and oar-like) uropods, and a stout cheliped carpus with a deep ventrodistal shield. More usually encountered in core-samples because of its size, morphology, and probable tubicoly.

Benthic species, probably a shallow burrower in soft sediment.

Distribution

Bounty Trough, 2555 m, TAN2402 Stn 106. Also, from the Bay of Plenty to the Great South Basin, 670-1370 m.
