Taxonomic Remarks

The first Pseudotanais species to be described with elongate forcipate chelae were P. falcicula and P. vulsella but three have also been discovered from the Scotia Sea and Amundsen Sea (Blazewicz et al 2021) so it is likely that this species is closely related; but more study is required.

Description of Material

One of several Pseudotanais species with forcipate chelae, both fixed finger and dactylus being slender (unlike that of the type species P. forcipatus). Relatively large.

Ecology

Benthic sediments. A lightly built form of tanaid that may be partly epibenthic and occasionally use tubes for brooding.

Distribution

Bounty Trough, 982-1066 m, TAN2402 Stns 31 and 37. Also widespread in NZ waters including Chatham Rise, Hikurangi Margin, Kaikoura Canyon, and Great South Basin, 346-2003 m (but all need thorough review when complete taxonomic study is carried out).
