Taxonomic Remarks

This robust species (like OC#1) has crenulate dorsal margin of the cheliped dactylus (as in NZ#1) but with more and finer denticles/tubercles, and the propodus (palm) often has a dorsal spur (fresh individuals). The uropods are slender for the genus.

Description of Material

One of the many Parakanthophoreus species that have been described worldwide, distinct from Akanthophoreus in lacking lateral spurs on the pleotelson. A difficult genus to identify to species, with characters centred on the shape and ornamentation of the cheliped, length of the uropods (rami and peduncle), and proportions and setation of the pereopods.

Ecology

Benthic species, possibly a shallow burrower in soft sediment.
