Taxonomic Remarks

This species has a crenulate dorsal margin of the cheliped dactylus, but with only c. 3-4 denticles/tubercles, and short articles on pereopods 1-3. A larger species in the same area, Parakanthophoreus OC#2, has more dactylar crenulations (c. 5 or more) and more elongate articles in the pereopods 1-3 at least.

Description of Material

One of the many Parakanthophoreus species that have been described worldwide, distinct from Akanthophoreus in lacking lateral spurs on the pleotelson. A difficult genus to identify to species, with characters centred on the shape and ornamentation of the cheliped, length of the uropods (rami and peduncle), and proportions and setation of the pereopods.
