Taxonomic Remarks

There are two undescribed NZ species in this group, both slender and with the cheliped basis posterior lobe partly enfolded by the lateral sclerite/sternite. However, the specimen photographed appears to be a different species as the basis lobe is free and there is a large hyposphenium on pereonite-1. This is the third species of bathytanaidin now recorded in the NZ deep sea.

Description of Material

A robust member of this subfamily of the Paratanaidae and probably representing a separate group. Typhlotanaid in general appearance but with long setulate setae on the antennules and antennae.

Ecology

Benthic sediments. Possibly a shallow-deep burrower.
