Taxonomic Remarks

The genus Promesostoma is, by far, one of the most taxonomically complex taxa within Rhabdocoela, with 43 described species. Identification of species of Promesostoma is based on the stylet morphology, the presence/absence of a male copulatory bursa and distal glandular organ, the number of seminal vesicles, and the position of the male atrial organs respect to the pharynx. Promesostoma sp.1 is related to the clade of species ‘roseapharynx’ and particularly to P. roseapharynx. Both species present the proximal funnel of the stylet bent over ~90°. However, Promesostoma sp.1 lacks the distinctive pinkish colouration of the pharynx as is the case in P. roseapharynx. Furthermore, the stylet of P. roseapharynx (177 µm long) is some shorter than that of Promesostoma sp.1 (182 µm). The proximal funnel of the stylet of Promesostoma sp.1 is larger than that of P. roseapharynx, and the stylet ends in a blunt vs. an oblique, sharp tip, respectively.

Description of Material

Species of Promesostoma with eyes. Male copulatory bursa present. The prostate and the single seminal vesicles are oriented backwards; prostate vesicle situated anterior to the pharynx and the seminal one latero-posteriorly.
