Taxonomic Remarks

Seven species of Phonorhynchus are recognised today. Five of those species present a prostate stylet type I similar to the one of Phonorhynchus sp.1 because of the presence of external ornamentations. However, the prostate stylet type I of Phonorhynchus sp.1 does not show a distal spine or flagellum, as is the case in P. pernix and P. helgolandicus, or a broad plate such in P. contortus and P. velatus. The prostate stylet type II of P. pearsei is relative narrower compared to that in Phonorhynchus sp.1, and externally shows a spiralized rim, which is absent in Phonorhynchus sp.1. Furthermore, the prostate stylet type II of Phonorhynchus sp.1 (129 µm long) is comparable to that of P. pearsei (122 µm), longer than that of P. contortus (72–92 µm) and P. pernix (50–56 µm), and smaller than that of P. helgolandicus (140 µm) and P. velatus (145–217 µm).

Prostate stylet type II flagelar-shaped, with a proximal funnel and tapering to a distal sharp tip, 116–142 µm long (x¯ = 129 µm; n = 2).
