Taxonomic Remarks

The only known species of Cicerina bearing two cirri within the male copulatory bulb is C. bicirrata and Cicerina sp.1. However, in the two previously known species, the accessory cirrus is longer than the ejaculatory cirrus, whereas in Cicerina sp.2 the ejaculatory cirrus is longer than the accessory one. Furthermore, the ejaculatory cirrus of Cicerina sp.2 carries a stylet, a characteristic only known from C. triangularis. Nonetheless, C. triangularis only has an ejaculatory cirrus and no other comparisons with Cicerina sp.2 are necessary.

Description of Material

Species of Cicerina with two spiny cirri within the male copulatory bulb (ejaculatory and accessory). The ejaculatory cirrus is 45–49 µm in length (x¯ = 47 µm; n = 2) and is armed with 4-µm-long, triangular spines. The stylet is 28–30 µm long (x¯ = 29 µm; n = 2). The accessory cirrus is 27–29 µm long (x¯ = 28 µm; n = 2) and is armed with 5–6 µm long, claw-shaped spines. The bursal mouthpieces are 18 µm long (n = 2), their proximal part is funnel shaped and the distal tubular.
