Taxonomic Remarks

Austrorhynchus sp.1 is only comparable with A. hawaiiensis considering their structure of the prostate stylet type III (which includes a flagellum and a plate with distal comb). However, that structure is much smaller in Austrorhynchus sp.1: flagellum 50 µm long, plate 24 µm long and 16 µm wide, and spines of the comb 1–4 µm long. In A. hawaiiensis those structures measure: flagellum 86 µm long, plate 47 µm long and 40 µm wide distally, and spines of the comb 1–4 µm long (measured on the holotype). The number of spines is also smaller in Austrorhynchus sp.1 (17) than in A. hawaiiensis (30).

Description of Material

Species of Austrorhynchus with prostate stylet type II funnel shaped and with distal hook, and prostate stylet type III with differentiated flagellum and a plate with distal comb. The prostate stylet type II measures 26 µm long. The measurements of the part of the prostate stylet type III are: flagellum 50 µm long, plate 24 µm long and 16 µm wide, and spines of the comb 1–4 µm long. The number of spines on the plate comb is 17.
