Taxonomic Remarks

The placement of this species in the genus Zafrona is only tentatively made here. It has the elongate shell with the combination of axial and spiral sculpture in common with representatives of this genus. But it has more rounded whorls and a different aperture form with a clear sinus, which is not present in other members of the genus Zafrona. This species can be easily distingueshed by its rounded whorls, elegant shell and aperture form with the clear sinus.

Description of Material

Shell of average for the genus, adult size up to 3.6 mm; fusifom, elongate. Rounded whorls. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral and elongate, consisting of about 1.3 whorls. First part of protoconch smooth, last part close tot eh trasition tot he teleoconch whit very weak axial cords. Transition to teleoconch clearly visible. Teleoconch consisting of about 3.6 whorls. Axial sculpture of strong axial ribs with rather wide interspaces on all whorls. There are 13-14 of these axial ribs on each whorl. Last axial rib close to the aperture stronger. Spiral sculpture consisting of narrow spiral cords, which overrun the axial sculpture. There are three of these cords on the first whorl increasing to five on the penultimate whorl. Most adapical cord weak. Last whorl with 8 of these cords, going over in the basal cords, which ventrally range to about 2/3th of the columellar height. Aperture average width fort he genus, about 45% of shell height. Outside of outer lip thickened, with the continuation of the spiral sculpture. Inside of outer lip with a clear sinus on the adapical end and five denticles near the edge of the aperture. Columellar callus clearly present, slightly raised, with a ridge of semi-merged denticles on the abapical side. Parietal callus clearly present. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. Teleoconch whorls cream. Aperture and columella white. Protoconch white. Height of holotype: 3.6 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
