Taxonomic Remarks

Seminella peasei is close to this species and is found sympatrically with it in several of the stations of this expedition. It differs by the different protoconch which has more whorls, is not smooth and has a clear carina. The teleoconch whorls of S. peasei also show a weak spiral sculpture and the aperture of S. peasei has a weaker rim on the inside of the outer lip. Seminella virginea (A.A. Gould, 1860) from the Pacific shares the smooth protoconch and some color morphs of this species match very good the pattern of the new species. S. virginea differs in being smaller, having a lower number of teleoconch whorls, having not shouldered whorls, having much more and less pronounced axial ribs and a weaker rim on the inside of the outer lip.

Description of Material

Shell of rather big siez for the genus, adult size up to 4.2 mm; fusifom, elongate. Slightly shouldered whorls. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch multispiral, consisting of about 2.8 smooth whorls. Transition to teleoconch clearly visible. Teleoconch consisting of about 3.8-4 whorls. Axial sculpture on all whorls, consisting of axial ribs with narrow interspaces. There are 16-17 ribs on each teleoconch whorl. Dorsal side of the last whorls with serieously reduced ribs still visible close to the suture, but obsolete lower on the whorl, creating a smoother zone. Spiral sculpture apart from the basal cords consisting of one rather narrow subsutural cord which overruns the axial ribs. Basal cords clearly present and ventrally reaching to just above half of the apertural height. Aperture typical for the genus: narrow and elongate. About 53% of shell height. Outside of outer lip with the continuation of the basal cords on the abapical end. Inside of outer lip with a weak sinus and below this sinus a thickened rim with small grooves on the edge. Columellar callus clearly present, slightly raised. Smooth inside near the edge, deeper inside there is a groove a about mid-columellar height. Parietal callus clearly present. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. First teleoconch whorls not translucent white. Later teleoconch whorls slightly translucent with a pattern of brownish axial zigzag lines or brown network pattern, a white subsutral spiral band with just below this band a white and brown dotted line. On the last whorl there are 3 more white dotted lines present. Basal cords with white and brown spots. Aperture and columella white with some pattern showing through the parietal callus. Protoconch white. Height of holotype: 4.1 mm
