Taxonomic Remarks

This species differs from Mitrella neocaledonica Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 by its slightly smaller size, its protoconch with less whorls, its higher number of denticles on the inside of the outer lip and different form of the aperture on the abapical side near the siphonal canal. It differs from Mitrella minisipho Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 by its straigher whorls, lower number of teleoconch whorls, absence of axial lines, the clearly present denticles on the inside of the outer lip and the presence of denticles on the columella.

Description of Material

Shell of small size for the genus, adult size up to 4.4 mm; fusifom, elongate. Rather straight whorls. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about 1.2-1.53 smooth whorls. Transition to teleoconch very weak, almost obsolete. Teleoconch consisting of about 3.75 whorls. Axial sculpture absent, apart from some very weak, hardly visible axial riblets on the beginning of the first teleoconch whorl. Spiral sculpture only consisting of the basal cords which ventrally range to the adapical end of the columella. Aperture average width for the genus, about 42% of shell height. Outside of outer lip with an axial rib and with the continuation of the basal cords on the abapical end. Inside of outer lip without a clear sinus and with 6 denticles of which the most adapical and most abapical are rather strong, the ones in between are very weak. Columellar callus thick, not raised with a rim of semi-merged denticles. Parietal callus very weak, almost obsolete. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. Teleoconch whorls and aperture slightly translucent white. Columella white. Protoconch white. Height of holotype: 4.4 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
