Taxonomic Remarks

This species is in shellform closest to M. sp2. It differs from this species by its smaller size, more straight whorls, different denticulation on the inside of the outer lip, the presence of a raised columellar callus and a different color pattern. It differs from M. nix by its more elegant, smaller shell, a narrower, less rounded aperture, a higher number of denticles on the inside of the outer lip and a raised columellar callus.

Description of Material

Shell of moderate size for the genus, adult size up to 7.7 mm; fusifom, elongate. Whorls straight. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about 1.5 smooth whorls. Transition to teleoconch very weak, almost obsolete. Teleoconch consisting of about 5.7-5.8 whorls. Axial sculpture absent. Spiral sculpture only consisting of the basal cords which ventrally reach to about the adapical end of the columella. There is virtually a subsutural spiral band, but this is thicker shell structure from the inside shining through. Aperture average width for the genus, about 42% of shell height. Outside of outer lip with a thick axial rib with the continuation of the basal cords on the abapical end. Inside of outer lip without a clear sinus and with 7 denticles, which extend rather long in the aperture. Columellar callus clearly present, slightly raised, with 6 weak denticles. Parietal callus very weak. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. Teleoconch whorls slightly translucent white. Aperture and columella white. Protoconch off-white to cream. Height of holotype: 7.7 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
