Taxonomic Remarks

This species is closest to Anachis pinguis Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 from the Norfolk Ridge. It differs by its smaller size, more shouldered whorls, higher number of axial ribs which are not triangular, a more narrow aperture and different color.

Description of Material

Shell of very small size for the genus, adult size up to 2.5 mm; fusifom, rather globose, rounded whorls. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about 1.5 smooth whorls. Transition to teleoconch clearly visible. Teleoconch consisting of about 2.8 whorls. Axial sculpture on all whorls, consisting of axial ribs with interspaces about the same width as the width of the ribs. There are 17 ribs on the first teleoconch whorl diminishing in number to 13 on the last whorl. Spiral sculpture absent on the early teleoconch whorls and only very weak on the last whorl, consisting of flat cords with narrow interspaces. The basal cords are only weakly present and reach the adapical end of the columella. Aperture average width for the genus, about 53% of shell height. Outside of outer lip with the continuation of the spiral sculpture. Inside of outer lip without a clear sinus and not denticulate. Columellar callus clearly present, slightly raised, smooth. Parietal callus weaker, but clearly present. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. Teleoconch of the holotype cream with a brownish subsutural band. On the last whorl there is a second spiral band at about midwhorl. Aperture semi-translucent white with the brownish bands shining through. Columella white. Protoconch semi-translucent white. This species has several different color morphs, occuring together. The holotype as described above has a cream shell with brown spiral bands. Other morphs are completely brown, completely white or completely cream. There is also a morph with brownish protoconch and first whorl, becoming off-white with some light purplish hue on the last whorl and yellowish basal cords. Height of holotype: 2.3 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
