Taxonomic Remarks

This species can easily be distinguished from all other deep water species of Anachis by its smooth early teleoconch whorls, whitout axial ribbing, the only very week axial ribs on the last teleoconch whorl and the rather high end of the basal cords.

Description of Material

Shell of small size for the genus, adult size up to 5.0mm; fusifom, elongate, rather straight whorls. Slightly translucent. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about 1.5 smooth whorls. Transition to teleoconch weakly visible. Teleoconch consisting of about 4.3 whorls. Axial sculpture absent on the first two teleoconch whorls, starting weak on the third whold, clearly visible on the penultimate and first part of the last whorl, but again very weak on the last part of the last whorl. This axial sculpture consists of axial ribs with rather narrow interspaces. There are about 12-13 ribs on the penultimate whorl. The last axial rib close to the aperture is stronger. Spiral sculpture apart from the basal cords absent. The lower basal cords are clearly present, more adapical ones are very weak. The clear basal cords reach to the adapical end of the columella, the weak ones reach tot he adapical end of the aperture. Aperture average width for the genus, about 42% of shell height. Outside of outer lip with the continuation of the basal cords. Inside of outer lip without a clear sinus and with 7 very weak denticles. Columellar callus clearly present, slightly raised, with a rim of semi-merged denticles. Parietal callus very weak. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved, apertural side longer than columellar side. Teleoconch, aperture and protoconch semi-translucent white. Columella white. Height of holotype: 5.0 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
