Taxonomic Remarks
Nihonia morrisoni n. sp. most closely resembles N. maxima Sysoev, 1997, described from Indonesia. It differs from that species in having a broader shell, resulting in a less fusiform and more biconic outline, as well as more convex whorls. In N. morrisoni, three well-developed spiral cords are present in the subsutural area on all spire whorls, whereas in N. maxima only one or two very weak spiral cords occur in the subsutural area of the earliest spire whorls, becoming obsolete on the later whorls. Furthermore, the spiral sculpture of N. maxima consists of few, rather narrow primary spiral cords with numerous secondary spiral cords in the interspaces, whereas N. morrisoni exhibits a greater number of broader primary spiral cords with only a few secondary spiral cords in the interspaces.
