Taxonomic Remarks

The genus Pseudorchomene comprises a group of lysianassid amphipods distributed in circum-Antarctic and circum-subantarctic regions, with a bathymetric range extending from the surface down to 2,889 meters depth. Ecologically, its members are characterized as opportunistic or obligate scavengers, capable of forming large swarms to feed on carrion. Pseudorchomene is readily recognized by its triangular coxa 1, a character exclusive to this genus. Within it, two groups can be distinguished: those with a slender, elongate gnathopod 1 and a convex anterior margin of basis, and those with a short, stocky gnathopod 1 and a straight anterior margin of basis. The specimens examined exhibit intermediate traits between these groups, further supporting their recognition as a new, undescribed species.

Description of Material

Orchomenid lysianassoid with gnathopod 1 coxa subtriangular. Somites of pereon and pleosome without posterior humps. Basis of gnathopod 1 with anterior margin convex; carpus and propodus robust (carpus length approx. 1.6x width, propodus approx. 2.5x width); palm transverse and distinctly convex.

Ecology

The specimens were collected using baited traps with beef, in subtidal environment.

Distribution
