Taxonomic Remarks

This species is closest to Mitrella cyanae Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 from the far south of New Caledonia. It differs by its smaller size, smaller protoconch, more elongate shell, less rounded whorls, absence of spiral cords and the more narrow aperture. Mitrella arcta is smaller, has more straight whorls and a narrower aperture with different denticulation.

Description of Material

Shell of moderate size for the genus, adult size up to 11.5 mm; fusifom, elongate. First whorls rather straight, later whorls slightly rounded. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about 1.6-1.7 smooth whorls. Transition to teleoconch very weak. Teleoconch consisting of about 5.3 whorls. Axial sculpture absent. Spiral sculpture absent, apart from the basal cords. The abapical most are very strong and clearly present. These strong cords reach to about the adapical end of the columella. More adapical of these strong cords, there are five weak close set extra cords, which reach to about halfway the parietal callus. Aperture average width for the genus, about 44% of shell height. Outside of outer lip with a thickened axial rib, with the continuation of the basal cords on the abapical end. Inside of outer lip without a clear sinus and with 7 strong denticles. Second and third most abapical less strong and very close to each other. Columellar callus thick, not raised, with a thickened rim with 4 denticles, adapical most stronger. Parietal callus clearly present. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. Teleoconch whorls whitish with beige irregular markings.. Aperture and columella white. Protoconch slightly translucent white. Height of holotype: 11.5 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
