Taxonomic Remarks
The family Polynoidae has been poorly studied in the region. Polynoidae is a species-rich family (~900 spp., 167 genera) with many undescribed taxa in tropical/subtropical benthos, including symbionts on corals/echinoderms common in Comoros reefs (Bonifácio & Menot, 2029). The Comorian specimens are likely new to science. No Polynoidae species are documented from the Comoros Islands on GBIF or WoRMS, despite surveys in the Northern Mozambique Channel yielding thousands of benthic records (GBIF.org, 2026; WoRMS, 2026a). Nearby Madagascar and South Africa have scattered reports (e.g., Hololepidella nigropunctata from Madagascar/Mozambique), but checklists for the area are incomplete.
