Taxonomic Remarks

The only species of Glycera described from areas close to the Comoros is Glycera madagascariensis Böggemann & Fiege, 2001, originally described from Madagascar. Glycera madagascariensis differs morphologically from the Comorian material. The two species differ in the aileron morphology: in the Comorian specimen (Glycera sp. 2) the aileron is forked with three prongs, whereas in G. madagascariensis it has a triangular base. Several Glycera species recorded from nearby regions, including Mozambique and Madagascar, are likely cosmopolitan or in need of taxonomic revision. For example, Glycera alba has been recorded in the region but is a well-known cosmopolitan species that likely represents a complex of cryptic species.
