Nick Hardman-Mountford
Director of Development
Nick joins Nekton and the Ocean Census as Director of Development, building on his diverse experience across marine science, conservation leadership, intergovernmental policy and diplomacy. Most recently, he founded re:Blue Consulting, advising on a range of high-impact ocean sustainability initiatives. Previously, he led the Blue Climate programme at Conservation International, bringing the power of coastal ecosystems to building climate resilience for coastal communities. Prior to this he was Head of Ocean and Natural Resources at The Commonwealth Secretariat, supporting the 56 member governments on ocean and climate governance, energy transition and natural resources reform, launching the flagship Commonwealth Blue Charter and Sustainable Energy Transition Programs and the Apia Commonwealth Ocean Declaration.
Before joining the Commonwealth, Nick held positions as Principal Scientist at Australia’s national research agency, CSIRO; Director of the UK Centre of Excellence on Air-Sea Interactions and Fluxes (CASIX), and Board member of the UK National Centre for Earth Observation. His research has spanned Arctic to Antarctic and Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean basins, and he has published extensively addressing societal drivers such as climate change, conservation, carbon management, energy and food security. He is a Fellow of the Marine Biological Association of the UK; Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia, and holds various advisory roles.
