Taxonomic Remarks
Synalpheus sp.6 belongs to the S. neptunus (Dana, 1852) complex. The members of this complex inhabit the Indo-West Pacific waters, and are characterized by I) presence of orbitorostral process, II) relatively short rostrum, and orbital teeth reaching approximately the mid-length of the first antennular article, III) third maxilliped bearing a crown of 6-8 slender spiniform setae, IV) minor cheliped fingers spatulate, with rows of setae along the lateral margins, V) dactylus of walking pereiopods (3-5) biunguiculate, VI) telson lacking triangular projections on the posterolateral margins. Within the complex, Synalpheus sp.6 is distinguished by the following characters: 1) rostrum relatively slender, slightly longer than the orbital teeth, 2) orbital teeth broadly triangular, approximately 1.3 times as broad as the rostrum, 3) stylocerite reaching the distal margin of the first antennular article, 4) scaphocerite with blade slightly reduced, 5) basicerite bearing a minute subacute projection on the superior margin, 6) major cheliped palm with tiny bluunt projection above the dactylar articulation, 6) fifth pereiopod coxa in males armed with a small blunt subconical projection, 7) pleura of pleon sexually dimorphic, with male first pleuron angulate anteroventrally and bearing a small hook-shaped projection posteroventrally, third and fourth pleura bearing small triangular projection anteroventrally and posteroventrally 8) diaeresis present, with a notch at mid-width of the exopod.
