Taxonomic Remarks

The only species of Glycera described from areas close to the Comoros is Glycera madagascariensis Böggemann & Fiege, 2001, originally described from Madagascar. Glycera madagascariensis differs morphologically from the Comorian material. The main differences include the number of prostomial rings, with the Comorian specimen (Glycera sp. 1) having fewer rings (8) vs 12–15 in G. madagascariensis, and the morphology of the neuropodia. In the mid-region, G. madagascariensis has a diagnostically longer pre-chaetal lobe compared to the Comorian species. In addition, the aileron of G. madagascariensis has a triangular base, whereas that of the Comorian species is Y-shaped.Several Glycera species recorded from nearby regions, including Mozambique and Madagascar, are likely cosmopolitan or in need of taxonomic revision. For example, Glycera alba has been recorded in the region but is a well-known cosmopolitan species that likely represents a complex of cryptic species.
