Taxonomic Remarks

The only species of the genus Syllis recorded from areas close to the Comoros Islands are Syllis prolifera Krohn, 1852 and Syllis variegata Grube, 1860. However, Syllis prolifera and S. variegata are cosmopolitan species (type localities: Mediterranean Sea and Adriatic Sea, respectively) recorded from East Africa and Madagascar. Their broad distributions likely reflect species complexes comprising undescribed, morphologically similar taxa. Given their cosmopolitan distributions and distant type localities, the Comorian Syllis material likely represents a distinct, previously undescribed species.
