Taxonomic Remarks

There are no confirmed records of the genus Trypanosyllis from the Comoros, while a cosmopolitan species T. zebra (Type locality: Adriatic Sea) occurs in South Africa, Mozambique and Madagascar. A record of Trypanosyllis from Tanzania listed in WoRMS is likely erroneous and may represent Haplosyllis. Records of Haplosyllis (a genus within Syllidae historically confused with Trypanosyllis in older literature) exist from Tanzania (e.g., Trypanosyllis (Trypanoseta) being moved to Haplosyllis) (WoRMS, 2026b). This represents the first record of Trypanosyllis in the Comoros and likely a new, undescribed species.
