FOUNDING PARTNERS

Get involved

Whether you’re a technologist, educator, policy maker, citizen scientist or undertaking marine expeditions, there’s a critical role you can play.

The
Alliance

The Ocean Census Alliance is a growing network of scientists, governments, marine institutes, museums, philanthropy, technology, media and civil society partners working together to accelerate species discovery.

The Ocean Census Hub coordinates Alliance activities, manages funding, and oversees core programmes – including expeditions, the Science Network, Species Discovery Workshops and Awards and the Biodiversity Data Platform.

The Impact of The Alliance

Supporting Research
Activities

Providing 19 Species Discovery Awards to support taxonomists and marine biologists worldwide.

Expanding Exploration
Efforts

Partnering with institutions to jointly conduct 10 expeditions and host 8 Species Discovery Workshops in priority biodiversity regions.

Marine Biodiversity
Data

Opening access to marine biodiversity data – Publishing discoveries through the Ocean Census Biodiversity Data Platform, ensuring open access for scientists, conservationists, and policymakers.

Global Network
of Experts

Connecting a global network of experts – Bringing together over 800 scientists across 67 countries, working to revolutionise species classification and marine research.

“We are lucky to be living in an era of incredible technological advancement. The Ocean Census is a global effort with global partners and success will be borne by our united endeavour.”

How You Can Get Involved

Scientists & Researchers

Join the Science Network to participate in expeditions, Species Discovery Workshops and Awards, and lead the discovery of ocean life.

Research Institutes

Collaborate on expeditions, Species Discovery Workshops, Awards and research to accelerate species discovery and inform and inspire the public and policy makers.

Governments

We are developing opportunities for governments to use Ocean Census data for biodiversity management, science grants, and marine research infrastructure.

Civil Society Organisations

Align programmes, campaigns, investments and jointly undertake initiatives to scale species discovery and advance the protection of ocean life.

Media & Engagement

Tell the story of the discovery of ocean life – by joining expeditions to reporting on species discovery events – to inspire public and policy awareness and engagement.

Philanthropy, Business & Enterprise

Provide funding, in-kind support and technical expertise to support and scale the initiative and align existing programmes and investments to jointly advance biodiversity research and conservation.

Partner Spotlight:
Open Cell

The Ocean Census journey is supported by Open Cell and their future-facing work to make state-of-the-art facilities more accessible.

The 21-day Macaronesia Tenerife Submersible and Diver Expedition has been facilitated by their innovative, mobile laboratory system, enabling researchers to start the taxonomic process within moments of specimens reaching the shore.
The integration of advanced facilities and skills is critical to the Ocean Census mission.

Out-of-the-box thinking and processes that can streamline species identification and data gathering, and enhance the efficiency of research that is often conducted in remote and often challenging marine environments, is essential.
