“We have a race against time to discover ocean life before it is lost for generations to come. Ocean Census will create an immense wealth of openly accessible knowledge that will benefit and sustain all life on Earth.”
– Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of The Nippon Foundation

The Ocean Census, founded by The Nippon Foundation and Nekton in 2023, is the world’s largest initiative to accelerate the discovery of ocean life. The Impact Report 2025 report emphasises the urgent need for this mission: 90% of marine species remain undocumented, while extinctions are happening at over 1,000 times the natural rate.

Without faster discovery, many species will vanish before they are known.

The Ocean Census has proven that open, global collaboration can accelerate marine species discovery at unprecedented speed. By combining science, technology, and partnerships, it transforms curiosity into action—supporting biodiversity protection, scientific innovation, and long-term sustainability of ocean life.
