Taxonomic Remarks

Resembles several other local undescribed species of Tetrastemma sp. (e.g. Tetrastemma sp. SMSA006, Tetrastemma sp. SMSA011, Tetrastemma sp. SMSA019), but is easily distinguished by the yellow-orange patches over the first pair of eyes, cylindrical (as opposed to pear-shaped) basis, and by COI sequence data.

Description of Material

Body 9 to 22 mm long, 0.5 to 0.8 mm wide, light golden to orange, semi-translucent. Cephalic lobe slightly wider than neck, rounded, one third longer than wide, separated from body by a neck furrow, with two pairs of ocelli and a pair of yellow-orange patches covering the first pair. Prominent oblique cerebral organ furrows visible dorsally and ventrally. Posterior tip bluntly pointed. Proboscis tinged light-orange due to the presence of numerous pigment granules. Stylet basis cylindrical with rounded distal end, S/B = 1. Two accessory stylet sacs with 1 or 2 stylets in each.

Ecology

Found in coralline and other algae on exposed coasts in the intertidal zone.

Distribution

Found at Harmer’s Haven and at Pea Soup No 2 Beach, Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia.
