Taxonomic Remarks

The species can be differentiated from any other known reptant polystiliferan by its distinct colour pattern, as well as COI sequence data. Closest known relative is a co-occurring species Drepanophoridae sp. SMTM021. Of the five species of reptant polystiliferans that have been collected off the coast of Timor by the Siboga Expedition in January 1900, and reported by Stiasni-Wijnhoff (1936), only one, Drepanobanda trilineata, is reported to have dorsal longitudinal stripes after preservation (color in life is not known). But the banding pattern is different from the present species. D. trilineata is described as a brownish worm with three longitudinal stripes; the middle stripe is darkest, extending to the tip of head, while the two lateral stripes are somewhat lighter and gradually merge into the background color. The background color of Drepanophoridae sp. SMTM022 is white, sharply contrasting with the dorsal bands, of which the middle band is lighter-colored. Circumscriptions of current families and genera of reptant polystiliferans are based on characters of internal anatomy, many of which have been shown to not be reliable indicators of relationships, and await testing with molecular phylogenies. On the other hand, most species that have been sequenced remain unidentified beyond the level of infraorder Reptantia. Placement in the family Drepanophoridae is putative, and the genus remains to be determined.

Description of Material

Body 20-25 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, dorso-ventrally flattened. Background colour opaque white. Dorsally with a distinct pattern of longitudinal stripes: a single narrow orange mid-dorsal stripe, flanked on both sides with a wider charcoal grey stripe. Stripes begin at posterior margin of cephalic furrows and end at posterior tip of body. Cephalic lobe charcoal grey, except for areas overlaying ocelli and cerebral organ furrows (which are white), bluntly tapered, equipped with a broad and prominent mid-dorsal ridge, which is outlined by narrow white stripes. Cerebral organ furrows with secondary furrows (five pairs). Ocelli large, situated in well-defined rows — a lateral row along each side of head with 7-8 ocelli in each, and two medial rows, underlying the mid-dorsal head ridge each with six ocelli. The two medial rows are immediately adjacent to each other. Neck furrow lacking. Posterior tapers to a rounded tip. Gut diverticula not visible through body wall.
