Taxonomic Remarks

Body shape and color resembles Diplomma serpentinum, a species globally distributed in the warm waters (Indo-West Pacific, Caribbean, Easter Tropical Pacific), and a local undescribed species, Diplomma sp. SMSA031, but can be differentiated from the latter by the body color, having prominent cerebral organ furrows and lacking a conspicuous neck furrow, as well as by COI sequence data.

Description of Material

Body 15 – 60 mm long, 1 – 1.1 mm wide, uniform rusty-brown, with a semi-translucent anterior margin. Cephalic lobe wider than neck, 1-2 times as long as it is wide, rounded, separated from adjacent body by an indistinct V-shaped dorsal neck furrow. With a row of 6-8 ocelli along the anterior margin and sides of cephalic lobe, largely obscured by epidermal pigmentation. Prominent oblique cerebral organ furrows on ventral side, not visible dorsally. Basis of central stylet cylindrical with a rounded distal end. S/B = 1.4. With 2 accessory stylet sacs, 2 stylets per sac.

Ecology

Intertidal and subtidal. Associated with juvenile kelp, Amphibolis antarctica, and red algae.

Distribution

Known from Mozzie Flat, South Australia and Cape Patterson and Pt. Addis, Victoria, Australia.
