Taxonomic Remarks

This species can easily be distinguished from Z. sp 2 by its more elongated shell, not carinated protoconch, lower number of axial ribs, much clearer denticles on the inside of the outer lip, a much thicker columellar and parietal callus and a different color pattern. Zafra gracilenta Monsecour & Monsecour, 2016 has a more or less general outline, but differs by its bigger size, much lower number of axial ribs and a different denticulation on the inside of the outer lip.

Description of Material

Shell of average for the genus, adult size up to 3.0 mm; fusifom, elongate. Slightly shouldered whorls. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about 1.6 smooth whorls.. Transition to teleoconch clearly visible. Teleoconch consisting of about 3.5 whorls. Axial sculpture clearly present on all whorls, consisting of close set axial ribs with narrow interspaces. There are 15 of these ribs on the first whorl, increasing to 20 on the last whorl. Last axial ribs close to the aperture weaker and more close set, but still clearly visible. Spiral sculpture absent, apart from the basal cords, which ventrally range to about the adapical end of the columella. Most adapical basal cords and axial ribs forming small knobs on the intersections. Aperture typical for the genus: narrow and rather elongate, about 43% of shell height. Outside of outer lip thickened, with the continuation of the basal cords on the abapical end. Inside of outer lip with a weak sinus on the adapical end and 6 denticles. The three adapical most denticles much stronger than the rest. Columellar callus clearly present, not raised, smooth. Parietal callus strong. Siphonal canal short, open, slightly recurved. Teleoconch whorl soft yellow-orange. Columella and aperture off-white. Protoconch cream. Height of holotype: 3.0 mm

Ecology

Direct developing species with paucispiral protoconch, so non planctotrophic larvae. Most likely endemic.
