Taxonomic Remarks

This species is closest to Urolophus papilio from the Chesterfield Islands but differs in snout shape, coloration and ND2 sequences show strong divergence from U. papilio.

Description of Material

A total of 8 specimens ranging from 347 to 400 mm total length. One pregnant female contained a 152 mm long embryo.

Ecology

The 152 mm embryo was a late-term embryo and is thus close to the size at birth in this species.

Distribution

Only recorded from off Kenn Plateau in the Coral Sea.
