Taxonomic Remarks

Closest Calyptrophora (according to Cairns 2009 key and table) is C. spinosa (from Micronesia; Pasternak, 1984). These polyps are smaller than the 2.5-2.7mm tall ones of C. spinosa. The subsequent higher number of polyps / 3cm (14) versus 10-12 for C spinosa is thus not surprising. Sculpture on inner side of basal scale spine is hard to see but looks to have low profile longitudinal ridges, relatively smooth to the naked eye though; serrated ridges on C. spinosa. C. spinosa is described as having jagged, flattened teeth on the distal edge of the buccal scale; this species has two well defined points i.e. not jagged = separate species.
