Taxonomic Remarks

Belongs to the spongiceps group within the genus Apristurus, but clearly differs morphologically from the other two members of this group in Australian waters (A. pinguis and A. ampliceps) and preliminary molecular data reveals it is genetically distinct from other members of the genus.
