The Ocean Census is actively seeking a Data Coordinator to join our dynamic team to wrangle and input data (and quality assurance) into the new species data systems developed with UNEP-WCMC.

START

As soon as possible.

LOCATION

Home and Oxford HQ.

SALARY

Between £30,000-£32,000.

CONTRACT

Fixed term ending March 31, 2025, with prospect of renewal thereafter.

WORKING WITH

Science Managers – i) Network; Awards, ii) Taxonomy and with Ocean Census partner scientists.

Reporting to: Science Manager (Species Discovery & Sequencing)

SUMMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Data input – collate, clean and input all data into OC Species Data Spreadsheet
  • Create the automated QA and QC scripts which are run over the data to:
    o Clean, transform, and reshape data into a format suitable for downstream applications
    o Ensure data’s quality, consistency, and suitability.
    o Highlight anomalies, e.g., inconsistencies, missing values, outliers, redundancies, etc.
    o Store images/substitute links etc.
  • Species Data management – development and management of OC Species Data Management System (server and cloud).
  • Data Sharing / Requests – i) ensure all data is shared with data partners WCMC, ii) respond to data requests from Founding Partners and other partners.
  • Data Back-ups: manage data back-up and security of data across all systems.

KEY ATTRIBUTES

A confident, proactive, and independent self-starter able to work quickly, flexibly and responsively in a fast-changing environment.

ESSENTIAL:

  • Passionate / enthusiastic data scientist with Bachelor’s Masters in a related field such as computer science, mathematics, statistics or data science (4 years with BSc or 2 years experience with MSc)
  • Proven experience of data input and management (ideally biodiversity data)
    Advanced experience and knowledge of data and database management systems, Microsoft Excel, Structured
  • Query Language (SQL), Python
  • Knowledge of cloud storage and computing
  • IT literate with good knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Able to work using their own initiative as well as being able to follow direction from management and members of the team.
  • Highly organised, and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple areas of work.
  • UK-based

DESIRABLE:

  • Knowledge of Visual Basic Script (VB Script), Office Scripts or similar as well as project management software (e.g. ASANA)
  • Understanding how to store data in remote servers / cloud infrastructures
  • Interest in data architecture and engineering
  • Located in the Oxford area.
